The Truthful Christian

He was a 26-year-old Christian from Holland. One day, he changed his dress to thobes, a burnoose, grew a beard, and the people started calling him “the one who looks like Jesus.”One day, he met some Muslims, and he said to them, “I love Jesus.” And the Muslims told him, “We also love Jesus, and it is even a condition of Islam. We love Jesus and Moses.”

So this man tried imitating Jesus, helping others when he could, cutting their lawns and the like. After two years, he entered the mosque [the Muslims’ place of worship] for the first time, and he was greeted with “ahlan” [which means welcome, and thus was not greeted with the greeting reserved for Muslims “as-salaamu ‘alaykum” (which means: may peace and safety be upon you on the Day of Judgement)].

He said, “no; I want to be a Muslim.”

Then, the Muslims witnessed his testimony (pronounced “shahada”) – there is none deserving of worship except Allaah, and Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, and Jesus is His servant and Messenger – taught him the basics, and taught him how to pray. He began praying in congregation with them, not missing a single congregation. Then one day, he noticed that the other Muslims were arriving at the mosque after him, so he asked for a key to the mosque. And he was given one.

The Muslims then observed that not only was he opening the mosque, but additionally he was routinely found in optional prayer whenever they entered the mosque for the dawn prayer. [They would enter and find him already engaged in the worship of Allaah.]

Then one day, he told the Muslims how he decided to become Muslim. He said he had a dream about Jesus (the son of Mary), and Jesus said to him, “Be Muslim. Be Muslim. Be Muslim.” He said, “I woke up, and a few days later, I had the same dream. This happened three times.”

[The shaikh interjected and said, this is success from Allaah.]

So after having prayed for 20 days with the other Muslims, he died.

May Allaah have mercy on him.

This is the mercy of Allaah, and Allaah saved him [from dying upon other than Islam].

This is Sidq (truthfulness); he truthfully loved Jesus, so he became Muslim. Allaah guided him to become Muslim, because he was truthful in his love for Jesus.

If one is truthful in his love for Jesus and his following Jesus, then this should lead him to the true religion of Jesus (Islam) and should lead him to following whom Jesus commanded to be followed after him – Muhammad, the seal of all Prophets.

After all, the religion of all the Prophets was Islam, and their creed was the same, and their message was the same, and they confirmed each other. It is only the deviant who have distorted the message of the previous Prophets, and thus Allaah promised to preserve His last revelation (the Qur`an) from corruption.

Slave and Master.

Imagine with me the scene of a benevolent master who has a poor servant, whom he gives food, drink, money and satisfies his needs in return for some easy tasks. However, this poor servant flagrantly disobeys his master or neglects his duties towards him. Even when he performs these tasks, he performs them according to his own wishes and desires. Do you not think that this master has the right to expel this obstinate servant? However, he does not do so; rather, he gives this servant respite to return and apologize. What great  benevolence!

The Dove’s Love…

“At night, the dove sitting on the branch [of a tree] is calling on [to its Lord]

While I am in a deep sleep

By the Lord of the House of Allah (Ka’aba)! I am a liar! If I had been a true lover [of Allah]

Then the doves would not have won over me in weeping [in the pain of separation from my Beloved (Allah)!

Alas! I do not even wet my eyes [with tears] while claiming to love [my Beloved Lord!]

While the animals keep weeping [in their love for their Creator].”

[Imam Ghazali – Ya bunaya]

Sin.

You who commit a sin, do not feel secure about the results, for what goes along with the sin is more serious than the sin itself.

Your lack of shame before the angels, who witness you when you commit the sin, is more serious than the sin itself.

Your laughter when you sin, as you forget the punishment of Allah is more serious than the sin itself.Your delight if you get a chance to sin, is more serious than the sin itself.

Even your disappointment, if you miss a chance to sin is more serious than the sin itself.

Knowledge…

“Whoever recites Qur’an, his value is amplified.

Whoever records hadith, his proof is strengthened.

Whoever learns jurisprudence, his status is ennobled.

Whoever learns Arabic, his disposition becomes gentle.

Whoever learns mathematics, his opinion will be copious.

And whoever fails to defend his honor will not benefit from his knowledge.”

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF BELIEF

image

In the name of Allaah,
Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.

If it is said to you: Who is your Lord? Then say: My Lord (Rabb) is Allaah. So if it is said to you: What is the meaning of ‘Lord’ (ar-Rabb)?Then say: The One Who is worshipped, the Sovereign-King, the One in control of the affairs. So if it is said to you: What are the greatest of the things that He has created that you see? Then say: The heavens and the earth. So if it said to you: How do you know Him?Then say: I know Him by His signs and His creation. So if it is said to you: What are the greatest of His signs that you see? Then say: The day and the night.

And the proof of this is the Saying of Allaah –the Most High-: [Sooratul-A’raaf (7): 54] Your Lord is Allaah Who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then He ascended upon the Throne. He causes the night to cover the day which it follows with haste; and the sun, the moon and the stars are subservient and subject to His Command. Certainly creation and commandment are His alone. Exalted is Allaah, the Lord of all creation].

So if it is said to you: What is the meaning of ‘Allaah’?Then say: He Who possesses Divinity and the sole right to worship over all His creation. So if it is said to you: Why did Allaah create you? Then say: To worship Him. So if it said: What is worship (`Ibaadah) of Him?Then say: To single Him out with worship and to obey Him. So if it is said to you: What is the proof of this? Then say: The saying of Allaah-the Most High-:   [Sooratudh-Dhaariyaat (51): 56] I did not create jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me.] So if it is said to you: What is the first thing that Allaah has made obligatory upon you? Then say: Rejecting everything that is worshipped besides Allaah, and having true Faith [Eemaan] in Allaah.

And the proof for this is the Saying of Allaah-the Most High-:

[Sooratul-Baqarah (2): 256] No one is to be compelled to enter the Religion; true guidance has been made clear and distinct from falsehood. So whoever rejects ‘at-Taaghoot’(all that is worshipped besides Allaah) and truly believes and worships Allaah alone –then he has grasped the firmest handhold that will never break. And Allaah is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing]

So if it is said: What is the ‘firmest handhold’ (al-`Urwatul-Wuthqaa)? Then say: ‘Laa ilaaha illallaah’(None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah). And the meaning of ‘Laa ilaaha’(None has the right to be worshipped) is a denial and ‘illallaah’ (except Allaah) is an affirmation.

So if it is said to you: What is it that you are denying and what are you affirming? Then say: It is a denial of everything that is worshipped besides Allaah and an affirmation of worship for Allaah alone- His having no sharer in that.

So if it is said to you: What is the proof for this?

Then say: The Saying of Allaah –the Most High-:

Sooratuz-Zukhruf (43): 26] And remember when Ibraaheem said to his father and his people: I am totally free from everything that you worship.] So this is a proof for the denial and the proof for the affirmation is:   [Sooratuz-Zukhruf (43): 27] Except for the One Who created me

So if it is said to you: What is the difference between ‘Tawheedur-Ruboobiyyah’(Tawheed of Allaah’s Lordship) and ‘Tawheedul-Uloohiyyaah’(Tawheed of the worship of Allaah)? Then say: Tawheed of Allaah’s Lordship relates to the actions of the Lord –such as: creation, providing provision, giving life, giving death, sending down rain, causing plants to grow, and controlling all affairs…, and Tawheed of Worship relates to your actions, O servant (of Allaah), such as: supplication (du’aa), reverential fear (khawf), hope and longing (rajaa.), trust and reliance (tawakkul), turning repentantly (inaabah), fevernt desire (raghbah), dread (rahbah), vows (nadhr), seeking deliverance (istighaathah), and all the rest of the types of worship.

So if it said to you: What is your religion (Deen)? Then say: My Religion is al-Islaam, and its foundation and root is two matters: The command to worship Allaah alone and to associate nothing with Him, and to call to this, and to have love and alliance for Allaah’s sake based upon this, and to declare those who reject this to be Unbelievers; and the warning against shirk- associating anything in worship with Allaah; and severity against that, and to have hatred and enmity for the people who commit that, and to declare those who commit it to be Unbelievers.

It is based upon five pillars: the testification that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah; and to establish the Prayer; and to pay the Zakaat; and to fast Ramadaan; and to perform Hajj to the House if one is able.

The proof for the testification is the Saying of Allaah –the Most High-:

[Soorah Aali-`Imraan (3): 18] Allaah bears witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Him; and likewise the Angels and the people of knowledge bear witness: He Who maintains justice. None has the right to be worshipped but Him, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.]

And the proof that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah is the Saying of Allaah –the Most High-:

[Sooratul-Ahzaab (33): 40] Muhammad is not the father of any of your men,but he is the Messenger of Allaah and the last of the Prophets.]

And the proof for making all worship purely and sincerely for Allaah and for the Prayer and Zakaat is the Saying of Allaah –the Most High-:

[Sooratul-Bayyinah (98): 5] And they were not commanded except that they should worship Allaah alone, making their worship and obedience purely for Him, upon the true Religion and free from shirk; and that they should establish the Prayer and pay the Zakaat].

And the proof for the Fasting is the Saying of Allaah –the Most High-:

[Sooratul-Baqarah (2): 183] O you who believe: Fasting is prescribed as an obligation for you as it was prescribed as an obligation for those who came before you]. And the proof for the Hajj is the Saying of Allaah –the Most High-:

[Soorah Aali-`Imraan (3): 97] And Hajj to Allaah’s sacred House is an obligation upon those able to perform it; and whoever refuses and rejects the obligation of Hajj to Allaah’s House, then Allaah has no need of him or of any of the creation].

And the fundamentals of Eemaan (true Faith) are six: That you truly believe in Allaah, and His Angels, and His Books, and His Messengers, and the Last Day, and that you truly believe in Pre-Decree (al-Qadr)-the good and the bad of it. And Ihsaan (perfection of worship) is that you worship Allaah as if you were seeing Him, and even though you do not see Him then He certainly sees you.

So if it is said to you: Who is your Prophet? Then say: Muhammad- the son of `Abdullaah- the son of `Abdul-Muttalib- the son of Haashim; and Haashim was from Quraysh; and Quraysh are from the Arabs; and the Arabs are from the offspring of Ismaa`eel –the son of Ibraaheem ‘al-Khaleel’(the especially beloved one of Allaah)- may the most excellent blessings and peace be upon him.

His land was Makkah, and he migrated to al-Madeenah. He lived for sixty- three years: forty before Prophethood, and twenty-three as a Prophet and Messenger. He was sent as a Prophet (Nabiyy) with {ْ1}أَرْقا ,and as a Messenger (Rasool) with ‘al-Muddaththir’.

So if it is said: Did he die or not? Then say: He died, but his Religion did not die: it will remain until the Day of Resurrection.

The proof is the Saying of Allaah –the Most High-:

[Sooratuz-Zumar (39): 30-31] O Muhammad you will soon die, and the deniers from your people will die. Then on the day of Resurrection you will all dispute before your Lord.]

And after the people die will they be resurrected? Then say: Yes. And the proof is the Saying of Allaah- the Most High-:

[Soorah Taa Haa (20): 55] Translators note: the beginning of Sooratul-`Alaq (96): Aayahs 1-5. 2 Translators note: The seventy-forth Soorah. 6 From the earth We created you, O mankind, and to it We shall return you after death, and from it We shall raise you to life yet again].

Whoever denies the Resurrection is an Unbeliever, and the proof is the Saying of Allaah –the Most High-:

[Sooratut-Taghaabun (64): 7] The Unbelievers claim that Allaah will not resurrect them after death. Say to them, O Muhammad: By my Lord you will certainly be resurrected from you graves then you will be informed of the deeds which you did in the world. That is easy for Allaah.]

And may Allaah extol and send plentiful blessings of peace upon Muhammad, and his family and true followers, and his Companions.

Woe to me

If my Lord asks me “Have you no shame in disobeying me? You hide your faults from my creation yet full of sin you come to Me”

So what will I answer? O’ Woe to me, and who shall protect me do you see?

I keep forestalling my soul with thoughts of hope from time to time

And forgetting what is to come after death, and after I am warped in the sheets of the dead

As if I have guaranteed living forever, and that death will not overcome me

Then the harsh drunkenness of death overtakes me, who now will be able to protect me?

I looked at the faces, is there not from amongst them who will ransom me?

I will be asked what have I put forth in my life to save myself

So what will I answer, after I’ve been neglectful regarding my Deen

O’ woe to me, did I not hear the Speech of Allah calling out to me??

Did I not hear what has come in Qaaf’n, wa Yaseen’i

Did i not hear of the day the crowds will be summoned, the day we will be collected, and the day of al-Deen’i

Did I not hear the caller of death calling me; seeking me

O my lord a slave to you I come repenting, who than shall grant me shelter?

Other than an oft-forgiving Lord, to the truth he will guide me

I have come to you, so have mercy on me, and make heavy my weights

And lighten my reckoning you are the best of who will bring me to reckoning

How much should I..?

A scholar once asked another greater than him in knowledge, “How much should I build?” He replied, “As much as shelters you from the sun and the rain.” He asked, “How much food should I eat?” He replied, “More than what keeps you hungry and less than what makes you full.” He asked, “How much should I wear?” He replied, “As the Messiah (Jesus) did.” He asked, “How much should I laugh?” He replied, “As much as appears on your face but does not make audible your voice.” He asked, “How much should I cry?” He replied, “Never tire from crying out of the fear of Allâh.” He asked, “How much should I hide my deeds?” He replied, “Until people think you had not done a good deed.” He asked, “How much should I make public my deeds?” He replied, “As much as will let the keen follow your example but not have the people talk about you.”Image

Lions in the Cage

In the name of Allaah, the Beneficiant, the Most Merciful,
a poem written in Camp Delta, Guantanamo, Cuba

We are heroes of the time
We are the proud youth
We are the hairy lions

We live in the stories now
We live in the epics
We live in the public hearts (ll.1-6)

The Chief of the White Palace
Like other sinful chiefs
Cannot see our patience here.

The whirlpool of our tears
Is moving fast toward him.
No one can endure the power of this flood

It mostly happens, in these cages,
That the stars at midnight
Bring good news –

That we will surely succeed,
And the world will wait for us,
The Caravan of Badr.
